LI Mengfeng
Vice President
A native of Canton, LI Mengfeng is a University Vice President, the Head of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine at the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). He received a Bachelor of Medicine (clinical medicine) degree from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences (SYSUMS, now merged to SYSU), and earned a Ph.D. in Medical Science from the Joint Doctoral Program of SYSUMS and the State Key Laboratory of Viral Genetic Engineering affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM, now Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention). After serving CAPM as an Assistant Investigator for two years, he received his postdoctoral training at the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, USA, and then became a Research Assistant Professor at the same institute. He was later recruited by the Department of Pathology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as a faculty member (Assistant Professor). In 2005, supported by the Cheung-Kong Scholar Program Dr. Li was recruited by SYSU and became a Cheung-Kong Professor of Medicine and Microbiology, and in 2006 he was appointed by Chinese Ministry of Education to his current administrative position.

At his current position, Dr. Li oversees the University’s institutional strategic planning & disciplines development, coordinates operation and development of health sciences at SYSU, and plays a co-leading role in managing University’s medical education.

Dr. Li’s academic interest has been focused on understanding the molecular mechanism and clinical significance of unsolved inflammation, particularly its role in cancer development/progression and in severe viral infections such as Dengue hemorrhagic fever. His research has been published in J of Clinical Investigation, Cancer Research, J of Virology, Oncogene, J of Pathology, Am J of Pathology and other internationally recognized journals. Dr. Li also teaches the Medical Microbiology course to medical students at SYSU Zhongshan School of Medicine.
