Established in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of modern China, Sun Yat-sen University has fostered an exceptional learning environment and a favorable academic atmosphere during its development of over 90 years. It is a top-tier comprehensive research university recognized both at home and abroad for its remarkable strengths in a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities, natural sciences as well as engineering and medical sciences. Driven by the construction of its Shenzhen Campus, Sun Yat-sen University is now presented with new opportunities for growth and is gathering the leading talents to push forward its “three big constructions”: construction of big platforms, big research teams and big projects. The University is striving to achieve its development goal of a world-class university and world-class disciplines in accordance with the national major strategic needs, the international academic frontiers and the national and regional economic and social development.

Adjacent to Hong Kong and the South China Sea, Shenzhen is a beautiful coastal city in Guangdong Province and recognized in China as one of the self-innovative and dynamic cities. It has successfully built up its four pillar industries, i.e., the industries of high and new technology, modern logistics, finance and culture, and six strategic emerging industries, i.e., the industries of biology, internet, new energy, new materials, cultural creativity and new generation information technology, all of which are under booming development. In 2015, the Municipal Government of Shenzhen and Sun Yat-sen University signed a collaborative agreement, aimed at jointly building the Shenzhen Campus in accordance with the criteria of a world top-tier university. The Shenzhen Campus is located in the Guangming New Zone of Shenzhen City with an area of 340 hectares and will be put into use in 2018. The main disciplines in this campus will be medical sciences and engineering while a relatively complete academic system together with the disciplines of humanities and natural sciences will be steadily constructed and a talent cultivation system from undergraduate to doctoral programs will be established. In the next coming ten years, the Shenzhen Campus will become one of the Asia-Pacific region’s most important and internationally influential bases for innovation as well as a new growth pole of Sun Yat-sen University in its mission to establish itself as a first-tier international university.

The first few schools to be established at the Shenzhen Campus are the School of Clinical Medicine, the School of Basic Medicine, the School of Public Health, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the School of Biomedical Engineering, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the School of Intelligence Engineering, the School of Marine Engineering, the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the School of Information and Communication Engineering.

It is estimated that by the end of 2024, the number of permanent faculty and researchers on the Shenzhen Campus will surpass two thousand. This figure includes academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, Yangtze River Scholars, Overseas High-Level academic talents, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipients, Thousand Youth Scholars Program recipients, and other high-level academic leaders and outstanding young scholars. At the same time, the number of students will pass 20,000, including 12,000 full-time undergraduate students. In the future, the Seventh Affiliated Hospital located in Shenzhen City will be built into one with a complete system of full-ranged disciplines and one with the best diagnosis and treatment in Shenzhen. The Hospital will finally be forged as a high-quality center for medical treatment and public health disaster treatment as well as a state-level healthcare center.

Top Job Openings: Department Chairs and School Deans
Sun Yat-sen University was established in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of modern China. A top-tier research university recognized both at home and abroad for its remarkable strengths in a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities, natural sciences as well as engineering and medical sciences, Sun Yat-sen University has fostered an exceptional learning environment and a favorable academic atmosphere.

Adjacent to the Pearl River and the South China Sea, Sun Yat-sen University also has a satellite campus in Zhuhai, a beautiful coastal city in Guangdong province. Surrounded by mountains and the ocean, the Zhuhai campus enjoys breath-taking scenery and is an exceptional place for learning, teaching and research. Since its inception, the Zhuhai Campus has been one of the major campuses and a vital part of Sun Yat-sen University.

Zhuhai Campus

Driven by the new national strategic plan for development, Zhuhai is presented with major opportunities for growth including the construction of the Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai Bridge, the Hengqin Free Trade Trial Zone and strategic ports for “the Maritime Silk Road”. The City is poised to become the only city in Mainland China that is connected with Hong Kong and Macau by land by the end of 2016. As one of the earliest special economic zones in China, Zhuhai will spearhead a more open era in China and witness the rise of a brand-new international metropolitan area in Asia. The promising prospects for development will add to the charm of Zhuhai as one of China’s most livable cities. The demand for innovation in such areas as talent, information and technology will be more pressing than at any other time in the history of the City’s urban development.

Against this backdrop, the People’s Government of Zhuhai City and Sun Yat-sen University have signed an agreement, aimed at jointly enhancing the educational quality at the Zhuhai campus and building it into a top-notch nationally and internationally recognized modern coastal campus with a comprehensive disciplinary structure and a complete system for nurturing talents, built on the managerial traditions of Sun Yat-sen University.

In the next five years, Zhuhai Campus will become one of the Asia-Pacific region's most important and internationally influential bases for innovation. The Campus also represents a key building block in Sun Yat-sen University's mission to establish itself as a first-tier international university. In accordance with the needs of the nation's "One Belt, One Road" and "Maritime Silk Road" development strategies, SYSU has decided to newly establish the following colleges and departments at Zhuhai Campus: Department of History (Zhuhai); Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai); Department of Chinese (Zhuhai); School of Law (Zhuhai); School of Government (Zhuhai); School of Life Sciences (Zhuhai); School of Geography (Zhuhai); School of Mathematics (Zhuhai); School of Physics and Astronomy; School of Chemical Engineering and Technology (Zhuhai); School of Atmospheric Sciences (Zhuhai)。

Within the timeframe of the thirteenth five-year plan, Zhuhai Campus will invest more than 3 billion yuan in infrastructure construction and the recruitment of high-level academic talent. This will usher in a "new spring" for the Campus's development and allow SYSU to stand out among Chinese domestic universities. For example, the construction of an observatory and planetarium on Zhuhai's Phoenix Mountain will make SYSU the only university in China to operate its own observatory. To support his project, SYSU will construct a 10,000+ sq. meter gravitational physics lab in the mountain and build a new montain road for accessing the observatory.

By 2020, the number of permanent professors and researchers at Zhuhai Campus will surpass two thousand. This figure includes academicians of the Chinese Academies of Science and Engineering, Chang Jiang Scholars, Overseas High-Level academic talents, National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipients, and other high-level academic leaders and outstanding young scholars.
