On October 17, 2019, Dr. Jane Gerardo-Abaya, Director of the Department of Technical Cooperation Asia and the Pacific Division, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), accompanied by Ms. Wu Qiujing, Project Officer of China Atomic Energy Authority. SYSU Vice President Tai Zhongzhi met with the guests in Sun Yat-sen Kaifeng Hotel on Guangzhou South Campus.

Vice President Tai Zhongzhi extended a warm welcome to Dr. Jane Gerardo-Abaya, and introduced SYSU’s cooperation projects with IAEA. He expressed that SYSU gave full support to R&D project on Wolbachia biological technology, and expected to further deepen and expand cooperation and exchange with IAEA.

Dr. Jane Gerardo-Abaya was glad to visit SYSU and introduced the purpose of the visit and the concern for dengue fever. She hoped to strengthen cooperation with SYSU in nuclear medicine and nuclear education.

In the morning, Professor Wu Zhongdao, Party Secretary of Zhongshan School of Medicine, held a meeting with Dr. Jane Gerardo-Abaya in the Medical Science Building on Guangzhou North Campus. Dr. Jane Gerardo-Abaya listened to an introduction of Zhongshan School of Medicine, a report on the prevention and control of tropical diseases as well as international collaborations. The two sides exchanged opinions on expanding cooperation and reached consensuses. In the afternoon, Dr. Jane Gerardo-Abaya took a tour of the Wolbaki Institute for Biological Studies.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the world's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the nuclear field. It works for the safe, secure and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, contributing to international peace and security and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
