On June 15, 2017, Mr Gerald Leitner, Secretary General of International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), congratulated Professor Cheng Huanwen, Chief Librarian and Assistant President of Sun Yat-sen University, on being elected as a member of the IFLA Governing Board (2017-2019) by e-mail.

IFLA was founded in 1927. With 1,350 Members in over 140 countries and regions, it is the most representative international library organization. The Library Society of China (LSC) is one of the IFLA founding members and has attended the World Library and Information Congress since 1929. Four Chinese librarians have been elected in the IFLA Governing Board in four terms since 1993. However, there is no Chinese librarian in the Governing Board since 2012. As the only Asian candidate, Professor Cheng Huanwen won the election under the support of the Ministry of Culture of China and LSC, which is of great significance for Chinese libraries.

The Governing Board is the highest administrative organization in IFLA, consisting of the President, the President-elect, ten directly elected members, the Chair of the Professional Committee, the Chairs of each IFLA Division, and the Chair of the Management of Library Associations Section's Standing Committee. Professor Cheng Huanwen has been dedicating himself to the teaching and research of library science and library management for over 30 years. As a member of China Library and Information Academic Degrees & Postgraduate Education Committee of the State Council Degree Committee, Academic Library & Information Committee, Ministry of Education, and Guangdong Library & Information Committee, Vice President of LSC and Honorary President of Library Society of Guangdong, Professor Cheng enjoys a wide academic and professional influence at home and abroad. After taking office in the Governing Board, Professor Cheng will commit himself to improving awareness of Chinese libraries and promoting Chinese librarianship around the world, enhancing communication and collaboration between Chinese libraries and foreign libraries, and enhancing worldwide librarianship.
