University of Illinois President Visits SYSU Headed by President Richard Herman, a five-member delegation of University of Illinois paid a visit to Sun Yat-sen University on November 14. SYSU President Huang Daren and Vice President Xu Ningsheng met and talked with them in the Distinguished Guest’s Room of Zhongshan Building. The two presidents introduced their universities’ development in recent years respectively and discussed the possibility of carrying out various teaching and research cooperation in areas such as life science, engineering, law, accounting and environmental protection, and then signed an agreement on all-round cooperation between the two universities. After that, the Illinois delegation had separate talks with SYSU professors: the dean of School of Life Science Xu Anlong, the dean of School of Environmental Sciences and Engineering Li Shining, the dean of School of Law Liu Heng, the dean of Engineering School Zhang Zixiong, the dean of Public Health School Ling Wenhua, Prof. Wang Gang with the School of Physics and Engineering. They also visited several research centers and were deeply impressed by SYSU’s achievements in this year. It is the first time for Illinois University to send a school leader headed delegation to visit Sun Yat-sen University. Established in 1867, the University of Illinois is the best and most comprehensive public university in US. As a top science and engineering university, it is well known for its majors like engineering, biology, medicine, material and environmental science, and accounting which has been ranked at NO.1 position in the state. It has yielded 23 noble laureates in all. Currently, there are 22 National Academy of Sciences fellows and 28 National Academy of Engineering fellows among its faculty members. SYSU has signed a collaboration agreement with Illinois University in 1998, according to which SYSU will send one or two young scholars of the humanities and social sciences for a one-year-long research at the University of Illinois University. So far, altogether 13 scholars have participated in this program.
