Life and Death on Motuo Road, Strong Affections for Tibet

--SYSU held a public lecture on the outstanding deeds of Comrade Xu Xiaozhu, a cadre send to aid Tibet

The Swasey Hall of South Campus was fully packed on the night of April 2, 2009. Comrade Xu Xiaozhu, a member of the 4th batch of Guangdong cadres send to aid Tibet, the deputy director of Guangdong Poverty Relief Office, a representative of the 17th CPC National Congress, delivered a public lecture entitled " Life and Death on Motuo Road, Strong Affections for Tibet l". Zhu Kongjun, SYSU Party committee’s vice secretary Zhu Kongjun, and Li Qingxiong, the deputy director-general of Guangdong Judiciary Department, the team leader of Guangdong’s fourth batch of aiding-Tibet cadres, attended the lecture and gave speeches respectively.

The lecture began with a video, Affections for Motuo County", made by CCTV "Focus Interview" featuring comrade Xu Xiaozhu and his outstanding deeds. Motuo County, a China’s border county, is the only county that has not been connected to nation highway routes. People there have been living half isolated lives with their hopes and futures overshadowed by the impassability. Comrade Xu Xiao Zhu and his colleagues are determined to pave a path of hope for the Motuo people. Under their unremitting efforts, the project was highly regarded and recognized by the officials and was included in the country’s regional highway construction plan. Comrade Xu Xiaozhu also took advantages of the Tibet-aiding fund to build houses for the herdsmen. Meanwhile, comrade Xu Xiaozhu hardly had time to take care of his own family. His daughter, who suffers from brain oxygen deficit disease from birth, can not go on foot on her own. She is able to come to Beijing for treatment only in the company of his aged parents-in-law. His wife, too, also suffers from constant illness. His youngest son is only five years old. From time to time, audience would give warm applause to Xu Xiaozhu's moving story.

At the lecture, comrade Xu Xiaozhu introduced Mr. Ji Wenzheng, a 76-year-old cadre of Han nationality, who is the first Han cadre ever entered the Motuo county. With humorous remarks, Mr. Ji talked about his 60 years of working experience in Motuo County. Wei Huixiao, an excellent volunteer representative of the university, the seventh volunteer-teacher regiment member also shared her experience and her thought about comrade Xu Xiaozhu.

The lecture was held by SYSU’s Graduate School, Students' Affairs Office, and Youth League Committee.
