SYSU implementing new “2+2” joint programmes with universities in HK and overseas

The SYSU undergraduate admission charter and plan of 2009 has been released. 5 new joint programmes established this year will be open to applicants within Guangdong province.

According to the representative of the Admission Office, 115 bachelor’s degree programmes are offered by the university to the applicants nationwide, including those in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. According to the admission plan, 8000 applicants will be admitted(the proportion of arts to science is 3 to 7), in which an estimated proportion of about 4300 admission quotas will be allocated to applicants from Guangdong, almost the same as last year.

In response to The Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta, SYSU increasingly strengthens the educational collaboration with universities in Hong Kong and overseas in terms of fostering talented practitioners in the field of technological innovation. Since 2005, SYSU has been adopting the “2+2”model to train and develop students’ proficiency in joint program with Hong Kong University (HKU). This year, in addition to the programme of Civil Engineering (in joint cooperation with HKU), the newly established program of Microelectronics (in joint cooperation with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University), Electrical Information Science and Technology (in joint cooperation with the Chinese University of Hong Kong), and Computer Science and Technology (in joint cooperation with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) in “2+2”model are also available.

Students will spend the first and second year of undergraduate study at SYSU, while finishing their third and fourth year of study at a university in Hong Kong provided that they pass the qualification examination. The credits obtained from both schools on are mutually recognized. In the “2+2”model, the diploma granted by SYSU, and the bachelor degree by the Hong Kong universities will be conferred to students who fulfill the requirements for degree. The tuition for the joint program mentioned above is 30,000 yuan per annum for studies done at SYSU, and 100,000 HKD per annum for studies taken palace at a university in Hong Kong. Aside from the collaboration with universities in Hong Kong, SYSU also establishes the joint programme of Fair Economics and Management with The University of Queensland in Australia, and Tourism Management with Oklahoma State University in the USA.

The idea of “Pursuing one program while obtaining two diplomas” appeals to quite a few applicants. For the past three years, there has been a steady increase in the number of applicants in the civil engineering program Except for the joint programmes, the SYSU program of Microelectronics, Electrical Information Science, Fair Economics and Management and Tourism Management have their own admission quotas. Due to the specificity of the training mode and tuition standards, as specified in the admission charter, the joint program will only admit applicants who have filed applications to the program directly, while those who file applications to other programmes will not be allowed to transfer to the joint programmes even if they have complied with the program transfer policy.

In addition to the joint programmes, SYSU also established foreign language programmes such as Spanish, Arabic and Korean, that is targeting both students of arts and science, with a passing level of B in oral English as part of the requirement.

Accordingly, the SYSU Admission Consultation Session will be held in late June when high school students are supposed to submit their application after the University Entrance Examination. The admissions office encourages students and parents to keep their eyes on the relevant information on the office’s homepage.
