State Councilor Liu Yandong visiting the Cooperation Base of Sun Yat-Sen University-University of Washington Research Institute in the US

 

At the invitation of Mark Emmert, the president of University of Washington, Liu Yandong, Chinese State Councilor, led a delegation consisted of educators, scientists, and artists? And visited the University of Washington in Seattle on April 18.The members of the delegations include Zhou Ji, the Minister of Education, Li Xueyong, the Vice Minister of Science, Xiang Zhaolun, the Vice Secretary of the State Council, Jiang Xiaojuan, the Vice-chairman of the research office of the State Council, Liu Jieyi, Minister Assistant of Foreign Affairs, Zhou Wenzhong, an Chinese ambassador to the United States, Gao Zhansheng, the consul-general of China in San Francisco and Zhang Xiuqing, Secretary of International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Education and　other.

With the surveying of the Washington-Chinese Medicine Cooperation projects as the focus, the delegation visited the laboratory of Professor Zhu Tuofu, who is the director of the project.

As the first successful initiated project of the University of Washington-Chinese Medicine Cooperation projects, Sun Yat-Sen University-University of Washington Institute for Translational Medicine (SYSU-UW ITM) was founded in the Sixth Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University in January 2009. Huang Daren, the president of the university, Wang Jianping, the vice president of the university, Mark Emmert, the president of the University of Washington, Professor Zhu Tuofu signed the agreement of the inter-university collaboration in fields of science and education. Professor Zhu Tuofu was named the first director of SYSU-UW ITM, and Wang Jianping, the vice president of the university, was appointed the common director. The two universities will promote the close cooperation in infectious disease, cancer and other relevant medical fields.

The University of Washington-Chinese Medicine Cooperation projects are mainly sponsored by the state of Washington in the US, Bill Gate’s Fund and other large enterprises and led by the University of Washington. The University of Washington takes a leading role in many of academic fields in the world, especially its research in infectious disease field ranks first in the world for consecutively eighteen years. The purpose of the projects is to promote powerful cooperation with a couple of Chinese famous universities and research institutions, and jointly solve the world medical problems. During the visit, Liu Yandong gave high regards for this innovative scientific cooperation; he affirmed the contributions made on the promotion of the academic exchanges and cooperation between China and the US which were made by projects and Professor Zhu Tuofu. Liu Yandong had a genial conversation with the Chinese scholars from Professor Zhu Tuofu’s laboratory; include Doctor Yang Zihuan, Chinese young scientists Doctor Wang Tong and Doctor Huang Yunda from SYSU-UW ITM.
