Establishing Scientific Outlook on Development, Promoting Nation-wide Fit-keeping

--2009 Sun Yat-sen University spring long-distance running along campus and relay race of faculty members was held

In the afternoon of March 27, the 2009 Sun Yat-sen University spring long-distance running along the campus, which was jointly hosted by the Physical Culture and Sports Commission and Labor Union of SYSU, took place in the North Square. Yu Shiyou, the deputy party secretary and vice-president of SYSU, and Chen Chunsheng, the vice-president and director of Physical Culture and Sports Commission of SYSU, attended the opening ceremony. More than 1500 faculty members and students from nearly 30 institutions of SYSU participated in the race. The opening ceremony was conducted by Chen Zhuoyuan, who is the secretary general of Physical Culture and Sports Commission and associate head of department of Physical Education of SYSU.

Yu Shiyou made a speech in the opening ceremony. Carrying on the nationwide fitness campaign to improve the physique of the entire people, he said, was an indispensable part to the establishment of scientific outlook on developing and building a harmonious society. Raising a variety of mass sports activities to enrich the spiritual and cultural needs of the faculty members and students have been fine traditions and features of SYSU. Set by last year’s successful Olympics of Beijing and the upcoming Asian Games of Guangzhou, this spring long-distance running along campus and relay race had its own significance. He hoped this activity would promote more mass sports activities, carry forward the Olympics sprit of “faster, higher and stronger”, inspire the faculty members and students to work and study with greater enthusiasm, intensify their study of scientific outlook on development, promote them to make contributions in teaching and scientific research, medical service and administration, jointly advance the construction of high quality university.

The vice-president Chen Chunsheng triggered the starting gun in the launching ceremony, and announced the beginning of the event. Nearly 30 teams from the school’s institutions ran along the campus’s main roads and at last joined up with one another at Yingdong stadium. After the long-distance running, the representatives from nearly 30 institutions competed in the relay race in front of the Swasey Hall. The event set prizes for teams of good sport spirit and fine morals, as well as top 8 teams in the relay race.
