Sponsored by School of Asian-Pacific Studies, the First Simulated UN Conference took place on the east campus on the 16th of May. 50 teams of students that had been sifted from more than 100 applications participated in the discussion and decision-making of the “United Nations” concerning international affairs. Wang Xinsheng and Ren Hong, both vice dean of School of Asian-Pacific Studies, as well as Yuan Ding, dean of Southeast Asian Studies Institute, attended the conference. There were four “Committees” in the “UN conference”, the Security Council, the United Nations Environment Program, the Economic and Social Council, and UNESCO. Each team simulated the country in concern in the consultations on the international affairs in the “Committee”. The four “Committees” discussed six issues on that day, including tactics in corresponding to the latest development of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, establishment of specific measures of a global cooperation mechanism for the maintenance of maritime security, how to continually strengthen the cooperation of restrictions on the global greenhouse gas emission in Post-Kyoto Times, cooperatively dealing with trade protectionism with the deepening of financial crisis, further cooperation to restore the confidence in market, and promotion of the educational and cultural assistance projects in developing countries. After the heated discussion, the “Committees” reached a consensus, formed and adopted a draft resolution. It is reported that the “Model United Nations” is a far ranging
student initiated activity with a long historical standing throughout
world’s renowned universities. Organizers said this event was
aimed to promote the dissemination of knowledge about the United
Nations and the understanding of the United Nations’ affairs
among youngsters, and to enhance their comprehensive competence
in aspects including research and survey, communication, language,
rhetoric, organization and coordination.
