Professor Shen Huiyong from the 2nd Affiliated Hospital Receives Subsidy from Guangdong Provincial Finance Bureau for His Research Project

Recently, Professor Shen Huiyong from the 2nd Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, had received a subsidy of 2 million yuan from the Guangdong Provincial Finance Bureau for his project “Clinical study Platform of the Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury with Stem Cells”..

Spinal cord injury often leads to different degrees of sensor loss below the surface of the injured area. It also results in hyperkinesias and fecal and urinary incontinence which not only bring physical and mental agony to the patient, but also impose a heavy burden on the patient’s family and the society. The development of the stem cells research has brought new hope to the spinal cord injury research. This platform, led by the Guangdong Spine and Spinal Cord Research Centre (of the 2nd Affiliated Hospital), integrated advanced research facilities such as the SYSU Center for Stem Cell Biology and Tissue Engineering, a key lab of Ministry of Education, and Spinal Cord Injury Research Centre of SYSU, and covered such research areas as the basic research on spinal cord injury and stem cells, pre-clinical research, clinical research and transformation of research achievement.

The launching of this research platform will on the one hand benefit more patients suffering from spinal cord injury, and on the other hand, propel the scientific construction and development of the 2nd Affiliated Hospital.
