Campus
Under the direct management
of the university and carried out by the Center of Information
and Network with coordinated efforts from all departments,
the project of digitalized campus of Sun Yat-sen University
is the construction of a network and information-sharing platform
that covers the whole university, a university-wide digitalized
management, learning and environmental system.
Using the advanced national and international experience for
reference and after thorough study and reasoning, the University
raised a scheme with distinctive features for its construction
of digitalized campus. The scheme has clear guiding thoughts,
comprehensive targets, construction tenets that are suitable
to the development of the university and appropriate fundamental
principals.
The guiding thoughts are: ¡°one,
two, three, four and five¡±:
¡°One core¡±¡ªtaking the construction
of digitalized information resources and their applications
as the core;
¡°Two focuses¡±¡ªtaking the digitalized
learning and school management systems as the focuses;
¡°Three concentrations¡±¡ªputting
all the data, equipment and application in a concentrated
place;
¡°Four features¡±¡ªthe conceptual
feature, project feature, standardization feature and cultural
feature;
¡°Five unifications¡±¡ªunified databases, unified standards,
unified development platform, unified user management, and
unified gates.
Construction targets
The whole project will be enforced in two phases, the first
phase will focus on the construction and application of digitalized
environment, digitalized management and digitalized learning
system, the second phase will lay emphasis on the construction
and application of the digitalized research and living systems
while perfecting the construction of the first phase.
According to overall arrangement, the first phase will be
completed by the end of 2004 when Sun Yat-sen University celebrates
its eightieth anniversary.
Achievements that signify completion of the project include:
The completed database center:
The center consists of high-performance server, very large
storage system, security backup, core system software as well
as databases, gate system, certification system and application
and development platform for secondary software.
This will be the heart of the construction of digitalized
campus. The completion of the database center will provide
a unified platform for information processing, a platform
that offers the basic, shared and unified system for realizing
the concentrations of data, equipment and applications.
The completed video conference
system:
This system is used for administrative video meetings among
different campuses and interactive synchronized or asynchronized
teaching. Video conferences and teaching videos can be broadcast
synchronically on the campus network or the cable TV network,
and the videos and courseware can be clipped open on the intranet
as needed.
The campus card system:
A new campus card system will come into being that combines
the applications of the card with university management, digitalized
learning and living systems on the basis of the first-phase
campus card that has already had financial function and parts
of the management functions.
The university administrative system:
The launching of a new university administrative system, which
includes two core application systems of OA and MIS and is
built on unified platform and technical route, will provide
the faculty and students with ¡°one-station¡± service, embodying
the idea and concept that management is service.
The erudition project:
The erudition project of education technology focuses on resources
and teacher training, carries out experiments on applications
in education, and hastens the process of school education
informationalization, so as to promote the modernization of
education. It is an important component of the digitalized
campus project to carry out the ¡°erudition project of education
technology¡±, a vital measure to realize digitalized learning
and education informalization in the University.
The unfolding of the project will be contributive to the forming
of a new mode of teaching and learning, and helpful to gather
together a team of teachers who meet the needs of education
reforms in the new century and are familiar with conducting
teaching activities in the network environment. It is necessary
for teachers to receive training in educational applications
of information technology, to change their concepts of teaching
and learning, to learn the skills in applying information
technology in teaching and learning and the methods of design
based on the network environment, and to master and use the
theory and skills of digitalized teaching and learning. At
the same time, we should also bring up a batch of creative
talents who meet the needs of the time and are good at independent
or cooperative and exchange learning in the network environment.
The digitalized learning system:
Through construction of an advanced, general and international
network education environment, the teachers and students on
different campuses of the University can meet on the net,
thus solving problems such as shortage of teachers, etc. The
system can also integrate, manage and make use of the teaching
resources of various specialties in the University, pushing
ahead the education reform and the process of informalization,
and strengthening the academic exchanges with other institutes
of higher education in the nation and foreign universities.
It can attract more foreign scholars to lecture in the University,
making it more competitive in internationalization of education.
