October 26, 2001 marks a milstone in the university’s history. On this day Sun Yat-sen University and Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science merged to form a brand-new Sun Yat-sen University, a higher education institution more comprehensive with medical edge added, which finds demonstration in its reputed medical science teaching and research, affiliated hospitals, as well as medical service provided for students and staff.
