6) Recreational Sports

Public Sports on Campus

Statistically speaking, 21 athletic associations and clubs have been established in our university.

Regulated big-scale public sports activities

To sparkle the public¡¯s exercising initiative, the recreational sports activities have to be well regulated and organized. Thus, under the experience¡¯s guidance, our school has set up a time schedule for various university sports activities as what follows: the Marathon Relay Race in March, the Marathon Individual Race in April, the May Fourth Cup Volleyball Match and the Kangle Cup Football Match in May, the swimming match in June, the Three-goodness Cup Basketball Match in October, the Track and Field sports meeting in November, and the Calisthenics to Radio Music Match, the Winter Solstice to the Vernal Equinox Cross-country Race in December.

Diverse small-scale sports activities

We have assisted university Labor¡¯s Union, Youth League Committee and various departments in organizing multifarious interesting athletic activities, drawing people as many as possible to participate and enjoy themselves.

Clubs for various after-class sports activities

Clubs of different sport items have been established tailed to people¡¯s versified interests and needs. What¡¯s more, its operation can be combined with PE course requirement to offer particular training, thus benefits PE teaching and after-class exercising at the same time.

Evaluation on the public sports activities (by department)

An appraising committee composed of athletic commissioners from every departments, personnel from Student¡¯s Union, the Youth League committee, and the Department of Physical Education will be responsible for the registration, inspection, and evaluation. By the end of each semester, each department¡¯s score will be calculated, and the first eight departments with the highest scores will be awarded as Advance Group.
    96% of students have passed the school sports yardstick, and 95% of students have passed the national sports yardstick. Our school has repeatedly been honored as ¡°School of Long-distance Race¡±, ¡°Provincial Excellent Sports Qualified Unit¡±, ¡°Provincial Advance Group Unit¡±, ¡°National Advance Public Sports Unit¡±. Through carrying out the National Bodybuilding
Program, our school has organized public sports activities which improves the faculty¡¯s and students¡¯ health. As a result, Sun Yat-sen University has been awarded as ¡°Advanced National Public Sports Unit¡± by the National Athletic Commission at the 7th National Sports Meeting in 1993. In 1996, it has been honored as ¡°Advanced Unit¡± for promoting the National Sports Standard Act by both National Athletic Commission and National Education Commission. In 2000, the National Athletic Bureau decided to set up Youth Sports Club in our school, which has given a strong push to the development of the school¡¯s sports.
