This year the School of Mobile Information Engineering is established on Zhuhai Campus. As the youngest school in SYSU, it attaches great importance to the work of welcoming new students, and recruits volunteers from senior students in International Business School, School of International Studies and School of Tourism Management to welcome new students. According to Chen Ling, Deputy Secretary of the School of Mobile Information Engineering, the School also mobilizes the freshmen to participate in volunteer service, and asks the freshmen themselves to participate in the compilation of the freshmen’s guide. It is learned that 80% of the faculty and staff in the School have studied overseas, and the School will offer bilingual teaching and a different study experience.
This year’s sites are more neat and orderly than previous years. In order to bring convenience to new students, the schools and departments make strenuous efforts to simplify registration procedures and strengthen guidance, practicing the idea of “be kind to students”. All four campuses set up seating areas for the parents to have a rest and provide newspapers and water; the medical stations are located in convenient and prominent places in case any new students or their parents have emergencies.

Functional departments and units, schools and departments provide comprehensive and meticulous services to new students. The Student Affairs Office puts the focus of the work of welcoming new students on deepening connotation and creating atmosphere, and enhancing cohesion through direct interactions between new students and schools and departments. The banner quotes a sentence from the chapter on cultivating one’s moral character in Xunzi, adding a humanistic touch to the campus. The Party & Administration Joint Office of East Campus implements humanistic arrangements to welcome new students such as ensuring reasonable distribution of services in the living area and conducting product inspection before the buying rush starts. The Security Department ensures order and safety on campus and improves traffic jams.
Volunteers appear on almost every corner of the campus and the new students and their parents feel the warmth and kindness. Some volunteers who work across campuses have to get up at 5 am, but one of them, a Mr. Lin, said that he “feels happy and not tired” because he wants to pass down what has deeply moved him when he first came to the university.

The School of Life Sciences organizes “SKY Paradise ” parent meeting and garden party, and communicates with new students through microblogging with pictures in an effort to create a considerate and happy atmosphere.
The new students and their parents are impressed by the enthusiastic welcome. Xiao Han, a new student in the School of Mathematics & Computational Science, is attracted by the simple and ancient atmosphere of the university: “I feel SYSU has a strong flavor of academic research.” Ms. Chen, a parent said: “The atmosphere in SYSU is different from the fast paced modern life. It is elegant and full of traditions. The students here are warm and hospitable. I hope my child will cherish the time in college and concentrate on studies.”
Among the registered new students, Chen Bin, a freshman in the Department of Psychology is drawing much attention. He has progressive muscular dystrophy (PMD) but he makes unceasing efforts to improve himself. Since he came to SYSU, he has got several surprises. The university has exempted his tuition fee, book fee and dormitory fee for a year, and arranged a single room for Chen Bin and his mother. In order to make it more convenient for him to attend classes, the freight elevator will be open for him at regular time. Chen Bin said that he is very much looking forward to the college life, and hopes to study knowledge in his major and become a consultant to help other people to overcome psychological difficulties.
