The hand-drawn maps of four campuses on the special edition of SYSU Youth are attached to the freshmen’s registration files. The maps are hand drawn by four SYSU students.
According to Wang Shaofei, the author of the hand-drawn map of South Campus, the campus newspaper was launching a special edition to welcome new students, and the editors wanted to do something unusual. “Hand-drawn maps convey more sincerity.”
The four students undertook the tasks and started working during the summer holiday. Liang Xiaoman, the author of the hand-drawn map of Zhuhai Campus, said that she had lived on Zhuhai Campus for more than a year. In order to draw an accurate sketch, she consulted a lot of material including ichnography and photos. It took her two days to draw the map. Wang Shaofei also spent a few days drawing and redrawing the map. “There are many roads and buildings on South Campus. It was difficult to draw, and then after drawing, I found that the map I had referred to was the old version. Now, several schools and departments are no longer in those locations. So I had to start all over again.”
When the hand-drawn campus maps came out, some netizens responded with “fabulous”, while some alumni pointed out the errors in these maps. Xiaoman explained that since the maps were hand-drawn, it’s hard to avoid inaccuracies. In the summer holiday, she couldn’t make a field study on Zhuhai Campus, therefore, she added a note on the original map: The map is hand-drawn. We apologize for any errors. After receiving suggestions from the alumni, the four students made revisions once again. “However, what’s printed on the newspaper is not the revised version. There are some small misleading errors, for which we are most apologetic,” said Wang Shaofei.
