Vice Governor Chen Yunxian conducts survey and research in SYSU in full support of the construction of Guangzhou Supercomputing Center

On the afternoon of October 10, Chen Yunxian, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, led a group of leaders of the provincial departments to conduct survey and research about Guangzhou Supercomputing Center (GSC) in SYSU and held a meeting. Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU; Li Handong, Deputy Secretary-General of Guangdong Provincial Government; Huang Ningsheng, Director General of Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology; Wang Dong, Deputy Mayor of Guangzhou; Wei Zhonglin, Deputy Director General of Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Chen Shaokang, Deputy Secretary-General of Guangzhou Municipal Government; Ma Shu, Deputy Secretary of Bureau of Science, Technology and Information of Guangzhou Municipality; Jing Guangjun, Deputy Director of Bureau of Science, Technology and Information of Guangzhou Municipality; Lu Zexin, Head of Guangzhou Work Group of National University of Defence Technology (NUDT); and Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU, attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by President Xu Ningsheng.

Vice Governor Chen Yunxian affirmed and praised the efforts and achievements SYSU made in the construction of GSC. He pointed out that the construction of GSC is very important for Guangdong. SYSU and NUDT have finished relevant work ahead of schedule, making a positive contribution to Guangdong’s collaborative innovation. He also said that led by Department of Education of Guangdong Province, all departments should coordinate various resources to give full support to GSC, help solve such problems during its construction as talent policy support, orientation of the center and coordination between the province and the city, and focus on the supercomputing application in the fields of intelligent health care, education and financial services so as to make contribution to Guangdong’s industrial transformation and upgrading as well as the development of people’s livelihood.

President Xu Ningsheng extended his appreciation of the guidance from Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City and the support from NUDT. He introduced SYSU’s work in the construction of GSC, promising that SYSU will coordinate in GSC’s infrastructure construction and make a systematic plan on the construction of supercomputing discipline, scientific research and talent development. He said that SYSU and NUDT are confident to maintain healthy operation and technological support for the high-efficiency computer system. Meanwhile, the promotion and application of GSC needs the strong propulsion of the provincial and municipal governments.

Deputy Mayor Wang Dong said that GSC, jointly constructed by Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City, NUDT and SYSU, has received a lot of support from Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government. GSC has witnessed efficient cooperation, extraordinary infrastructure construction and recruitment of research talents. He hoped that the four parties of GSC will hold several rounds of negotiations regarding its organizational structure, and that Guangdong Province will provide more support in the future.

Vice President Li Mengfeng, on behalf of SYSU, reported the University’s general situation, science and technology work, and S&T services for local communities.

Lu Zexin, Head of Guangzhou Work Group of NUDT, expressed his pleasure in locating GSC in SYSU. GSC is based in Guangzhou, covering South China, geared toward the country and linked to the world. According to Lu Zexin, the establishment and application of GSC Pilot System in the first phase will provide effective feedbacks for the test run in the second phase when all devices are in place. GSC is for public good and needs continuous support from the government.

Vice Governor Chen Yunxian and his group also visited the GSC Pilot System, GSC display boards and building site, as well as the State Key Laboratory of Biocontrol at SYSU.
