On the morning of October 10, Professor Huang Tianji from the Department of Chinese gave a lecture entitled “How to Read Poems” to students on Zhuhai Campus.
In Professor Huang’s opinion, reading poems is a shortcut to learning traditional culture, so how to read poems is an important part in the learning process. The beauty of music in poems should be noticed and appreciated during the process of reading aloud. Chinese poetry, including the four-character poetry in Zhou Dynasty, the five-character poetry in Han Dynasty and the seven-character poetry in Tang Dynasty, has laid emphasis on the metre, rhyme and tone pattern with the purpose of creating musical beauty in poems and making them easier to recite and sing by the coordination of single and double syllables. In the New Culture Movement, though the framework of poetry was broken and the musical beauty was destroyed, outstanding poets like Xi Murong could picturesquely show the musical beauty in poetry. Therefore, Professor Huang called on the students to learn Chinese down-to-earth by keeping pace with the time.
The atmosphere on the scene was so active that Professor Huang Tianji passionately recited “Man Jiang Hong”, winning lasting and warm applauses. All the students present spoke highly of the lecture and thought that the in-depth explanation gave them a new understanding of poetry and added new ways to study poetry.
