Students from School of Foreign Languages excelled in two national competitions

In two recent national competitions, students from School of Foreign Languages (FLS), Sun Yat-sen University achieved excellent results. Xiao Lini, a sophomore from the Department of English, was named the second runner-up at the National Finals of the "FLTRP Cup" English Public Speaking Contest. Zhang Yiting, a sophomore from the Department of German, was awarded the first prize at the 2013 “German and I — My Experience of Studying German” Essay Competition organize by German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in China.

The National Finals of the 2013 “FLTRP Cup” English Public Speaking Contest was held on December 8-13 in Beijing. The topic of prepared speech was “When Socrates Meets Confucius”. The contestants fully displayed their global awareness, cultural cultivation and critical thinking. SYSU student Xiao Lini emerged from preliminary contests and advanced to the national finals, winning the second runner-up with her remarkable performance. The competition has been held for 12 consecutive years and attracted 94 students from across the country including Macau and Taiwan this year.

In recent years, the School of Foreign Languages has been pursuing the notion of “Dedication to teaching, students and learning, and strive for excellence”, encouraging and supporting students to participate in national and regional academic competitions to showcase the charisma of SYSUers.
