On the afternoon of February 13, Zheng Detao, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, and Liu Yuelun, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Foshan Municipal Committee and Mayor of Foshan, inspected the construction of SYSU-CMU Shunde International Joint Research Institute (JRI), accompanied by Liu Wei, Deputy Mayor of Foshan; Liang Weidong, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Foshan Municipal Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shunde District Committee; and Xia Lianghui, Assistant President of SYSU.

Secretary Zheng Detao and Mayor Liu Yuelun inspected the construction progress of JRI’s teaching research building, faculty apartment and student dormitory. The Foshan municipal and district leaders held a meeting on the development of JRI. Relevant functional departments coordinated and solved the problems encountered in the work. They also offered opinions and suggestions on JRI’s development.

Secretary Zheng Detao affirmed the current work of JRI, and thanked Mayor Liu Yuelun and the municipal and district departments for their strong support for JRI. He said that SYSU will further study the orientations of local research institutes. Rooted in Shunde and covering Foshan, the institute will cultivate high-end talents, advance the integration of information industry with traditional industries, and promote industrial transformation and upgrading.

Mayor Liu Yuelun expressed that Foshan City has been paying attention to the progress of JRI since its initial stage. As an important platform for Shunde District and Foshan City, JRI should also turn its eyes toward Foshan and the Pearl River Delta region, nurture high-end talents for Foshan, and provide high-end services for the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries as well as the cultivation and development of emerging industries in Foshan.

After over a year’s construction, JRI’s construction project has entered the final stage. At present, JRI has recruited 15 professors worldwide and introduced 2 high-end innovation teams including a fellow of National Academy of Engineering in the USA. Researchers and students are expected to enter JRI in early April this year.
