At the commencement 2014, the graduates marveled at the beautiful scenery of Sun Yat-sen University when they watched Let Dreams Fly, an aerial video of SYSU’s four campuses and eight affiliated hospitals produced by SYSU TV Station.
"Be a good boy and fly well."
Qin Dongjun and Yang Jian at SYSU TV Station learned through online forums how to operate the aerial videography equipment: DJI Phantom 2, GoPro Hero 3+, DJI Lightbridge, Zenmuse H3-3D, flight controller, lighting stand, Android cell phone, and self-made lense hood.
"Where is the drone?”
"During the first trial flight on the central lawn on South Campus, I was very nervous," said Yang Jian. They had a lot of worries: the drone might hit a building or a tree and fall, or even worse, it might hit someone; it might “disappear” due to signal interference... Qin Dongjun said: “Flight control requires a perfect coordination of hands, eyes and brain. You have to know both flying and videography to capture a beautiful aerial footage.”
"Look, I’m in the sky!"

"Catch me!"
During May and June, there were plenty of rain in Guangzhou and Zhuhai. On fine days, they got up at five o’clock chasing the morning sun in order to get a footage of flying birds on South Campus, the “big book” library and Asia’s longest teaching building on Zhuhai Campus. After the stormy rain, they rushed to East Campus to work in the scorching sun in order to get a bright picture.
"Let me take a photo of you."
Different techniques for shooting aerial videos were adopted such as top down, bottom up, skimming across and filming around the building. The central areas on South Campus, the red building on North Campus, the library and teaching building on Zhuhai Campus, the teaching areas on East Campus, the typical buildings of eight affiliated hospitals... are stunning!

SYSU students and graduates were also included in the aerial video to add lively pictures. On South Campus, graduates from the Department of Chinese formed the shape of “SYSU”; on North Campus, some graduates and their friends were invited to wave at the camera; on Zhuhai Campus, teachers and students from School of Mobile Information Engineering waved flags with the words “I love SYSU” and smiled at the camera.
Qin Dongjun and Yang Jian editing the video
From purchasing equipment to shooting the clips, a month has passed. After editing and processing, the aerial video of the alma mater was presented to every graduate at the commencement.
In the familiar song and the beautiful scenery of red bricks and green tiles, SYSU graduates will embark on a new journey.
