On March 20, the 2012 annual meeting of Guangdong Provincial Professional Committee of College Student Affairs was held in Sun Yat-sen University. Yuan Benxin, Director of the Ideological and Political Education Division of Department of Education of Guangdong Province, Zhu Kongjun, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, leaders in charge of student affairs from more than 100 colleges and universities across the province, a total of over 260 guests attended the meeting.

Deputy Secretary Zhu Kongjun gave a speech on “Follow the Way of Connotative Development in Student Affairs”. He pointed out that the connotative development should mainly start from the four aspects of internationalization, professionalization, branding and refinement. The student affairs should allow communication and collision of different thoughts, and adopt open education. He also expressed that student affairs in colleges and universities, like a hundred flowers in bloom, should encourage development and promotion of brand projects to ensure detailed and effective implementation. He hoped that the sense of happiness and sense of achievement can become the driving force for student affairs workers.

Director Yuan Benxin fully affirmed and praised the work of the Professional Committee of Student Affairs, and hoped that we should facilitate research on the new tasks and new issues for student affairs against the background of social environmental transformation, cultural construction and internationalization, and further improve the quality and level of college student affairs management.

The meeting commended winners of the Advanced Individual Award and Kapok Award of 2012 Guangdong college student affairs, and also awarded the model projects and excellent projects of college student affairs management.

Vice President Dr. Lee Bird giving a keynote speech entitled “Overview of American Student Affairs Core Mission and Best Practices”

The meeting specially invited Dr. Lee Bird, Vice President for Student Affairs of Oklahoma State University, to give a keynote speech entitled “Overview of American Student Affairs Core Mission and Best Practices”. Dr. Lee Bird introduced the managerial logic, developing trends and core values of student affairs in American universities, and actively communicated with representatives present at the meeting, opening a key window for the student affairs workers of Guangdong Province to learn from oversea colleagues.

The 17 representatives from colleges and universities across the province also exchanged views on college student affairs core mission and model projects.

It is reported that the group of three led by Dr. Lee Bird discussed with Graduate School, Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, School of Education over collaborations in graduate education, doctoral program, undergraduate short-term study tour, short-term overseas study and oversea internship. They also had in-depth exchanges with students from School of Business, School of Engineering, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, and student counselors who have been to Oklahoma State University for a short-term study.
