The 7.0 magnitude Ya’an earthquake on April 20 shocked the land of China as well as the hearts of numerous SYSU students. Immediately, SYSU held a donation activity for quake-hit Ya’an.

On April 21, SYSU Student Union and charity societies on four campuses jointly carried out the donation activity “Loving Hearts Link Together”. By 12:00 pm of April 29, the amount of donation received by SYSU Student Union reached 193,940.11 yuan. SYSU Student Union remitted the money to One Foundation through Bank of China in the name of “SYSU Students”. One Foundation published the donation in its official website. On May 3, SYSU Student Union received an acknowledgment of receipt and a letter of thanks.

On the afternoon of the earthquake, the Standing Committee of SYSU Student Union held a meeting to discuss donation activities. On the very night, the donation plan was reported to SYSU Party Committee and SYSU Youth Association and gained their full support. The student associations including Youth Volunteers Association of Sun Yat-sen University, SYSU Student Alliance, SYSU Red Cross Society, Love League of Sun Yat-sen University, SYSU Student Assistance Association, SYSU Correspondent Station of News Center on East Campus, and Living Green responded actively to the appeal for donation.

On the first day of the donation activities, East Campus and Zhuhai Campus received 63,232 yuan. The Student Union and nonprofit associations on East Campus collected 42,829.9 yuan through charity sale. The Student Union and nonprofit associations on Zhuhai Campus raised 20,402.1 yuan. On the second day, four campuses raised 57,163 yuan and received high praise from the CYL Guangdong Provincial Committee, saying that SYSU “has set up a good example for universities and colleges in Guangdong”.

During the first three days, over 20,000 SYSU students participated in the donation activities. On average, every SYSU student donated 4 yuan and 1 piece of goods. By 12:00 pm of April 29, SYSU Student Union raised a total of 193,940.11 yuan (including the converted amount of Hong Kong Dollar, Macau Pataca, New Taiwan Dollar and US Dollar, accurate to 0.01 yuan). SYSU Student Union remitted the money to One Foundation through Bank of China in the name of “SYSU Students”, and through One Foundation the money will be sent to quake-stricken areas. One Foundation published the donation in its official website. Over 100 boxes of goods raised in the donation activities were also sent to Ya’an through China Post.
