On October 18-19, the National Russian Contest for College Students was held in Dalian University of Foreign Languages. Russian-major students from the School of International Studies at Sun Yat-sen University participated in the competition for the first time since this major was reopened in 2009 and began to enroll students in 2011. Zhang Yalin achieved the fourth place and won second prize. Zheng Qianmin, who minored in Russian during her undergraduate study, won Excellence Award.
The contest was divided into three rounds: preliminary, semi-final and final. In the preliminary round, Zhang Yalin stood out from hundreds of participants from 108 universities and advanced to the semi-final. During the prepared speech session of the semi-final, Zhang Yalin earned praises from the judges for her standard pronunciation, fluent speech and steady manners, and reached the final round. Contestants were asked to do consecutive interpreting between Chinese and Russian, adding excitement and challenge to the final competition. Zhang Yalin’s swift response and well-organized sentences helped her achieve the fourth place and won second prize. With composed manner and clear expression, Zheng Qianmin displayed her charisma in the speech contest for postgraduates and received Excellence Award.
