On the evening of May 16, the 92th Chinese cultural salon on Peking Opera mask design and painting was held in Room 201 of School of Chinese as a Second Language of SYSU. More than 70 international students from 20 countries attended this cultural activity.
At the beginning, the hostess in Mandarin Gown introduced Peking Opera and its masks by showing a vivid animated film, from which the international students got a comprehensive understanding of Peking Opera, the quintessence of Chinese culture.
Peking Opera mask design and painting
During the activity, some popular songs based on Peking Opera were played, and the international students were immersed in a festive atmosphere. Besides traditional Peking Opera masks, some students used their imagination to create distinctive masks. For instance, Korean students combined Chinese characteristics with Korean style and painted the traditional Korean “Bride Mask”, while students from Thailand overturned the tradition of male character masks in Peking Opera by painting lovely female characters. What’s more, some students started painting portraits for each other.

The Chinese cultural salons are hosted by School of Chinese as a Second Language with the aim to help international students get a better understanding of Chinese culture and to increase communication between Chinese and international students. 3 or 4 salons are organized by MTCSOL students each semester, which are welcomed by international students.
