Recently, in order to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Confucius Institutes, the “Confucius Institute Cup” MTCSOL (Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) Teaching Competition was held in Beijing. The competition was co-sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the National MTCSOL Education Steering Committee. Deng Meiling, a postgraduate student in MTCSOL program at School of Chinese as a Second Language (SCSL), Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), made her way into the finals and won a second prize. She will have the opportunity to join the team of full-time Chinese language teachers of the Confucius Institute Headquarters.
70 Chinese and foreign students from 33 universities participated in the competition, and 12 Chinese students and 10 international students entered the finals. Deng Meiling, under the guidance of SCSL teachers such as Li Bo, passed through three rounds of competition and made her place in the finals. The finals consisted of several sections including a quiz on Chinese language and culture, cultural talent shows and teaching skill presentations. In her teaching design of language points, Deng Meiling laid emphasis on teacher-student and student-student interactions, which got praise from the judges. Finally, she won the second prize of the competition.
