On December 22-23, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Graduate Student Exchange Forum on Translation Studies of the year 2014 and 2015, jointly sponsored by SYSU Faculty of Foreign Languages and International Studies, CUHK Department of Translation, SYSU Faculty of English Education, and SYSU Institute of Translation Studies, was held in SYSU School of Foreign Studies. The forum was part of the series of events of SYSU PhD Salons on Translation Studies, a semi-monthly academic activity hosted by SYSU Institute of Translation Studies.

The forum was initiated and co-chaired by Professor Wang Dongfeng from SYSU Institute of Translation Studies and Professor Wong Wang Chi from CUHK Department of Translation. It was not only aimed at an intensive exploration of the history of translation, but also served as a stage for high-level academic exchange on Translation Studies between universities in the mainland and in Hong Kong. It is planned that more events of the kind will be organized in the future.

During the two-day forum, 16 papers were presented by young researchers from SYSU and CUHK, most of whom are PhD candidates. With the history of translation as their primary concern, the papers cut through the edges of poetics, philosophy, psychology and gender studies. At the end of each presentation, the two host professors not only offered insightful comments but also raised thought-provoking suggestions. Professor Huang Yunte, a noted scholar and poet from UC Santa Barbra, was invited to the forum as a special guest. He made keen observations and inspiring remarks. The forum came to a successful ending with Professor Wong Wang Chi’s lecture “Translation and the Opium War: Significance and Methods of Research”.
