SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering Convenes 3rd Executive Committee Meeting

On June 6, 2014, in accordance with the cooperation agreement between Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), the SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering (JIE)’s Third Executive Committee Meeting was held on the East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China. Dr. Subra Suresh, President of Carnegie Mellon University, led the CMU delegation to visit Sun Yat-sen University and attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Professor Xu Ningsheng, President of Sun Yat-sen University.

At the meeting, Professor Jimmy Zhu, Co-Director of JIE from CMU and Professor Li Wenjun, Co-Director of JIE from SYSU delivered a report respectively to all the members present on the Executive Committee Meeting, with respect to JIE’s latest development in faculty recruitment, scientific research, student admission and JIE/JRI facilities.
All the members present on the Executive Committee Meeting acknowledged the progress made by JIE over the past one year since its official establishment, and proposed that two Co-Directors should further deepen the fruits of cooperation and expand the fields of cooperation, so as to turn JIE into a world-class Institute of Engineering, leading the reform of engineering education in China.
Also attending at the Executive Committee Meeting were Dr. James Garrett, Dean of the College of Engineering at CMU; Dr. Jelena Kovačević, Head of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at CMU; Ms. Romayne Botti, Associate Dean for Finance and Operations in the College of Engineering at CMU; Professor Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU; Professor Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU; Professor Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU; and Ms. Gu Wenli, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange of SYSU.
After the meeting, the CMU delegation visited the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou and expressed their interest in the application of data mining regarding supercomputing.
SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering (JIE) is a college housed at SYSU, an international collaboration between Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) established with the official approval of Ministry of Education in November, 2012.
