On the morning of June 5, Madam Zhao Yufang, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, came to SYSU to visit Prof. Su Qiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, accompanied by Mr. Wu Ken, Deputy Secretary-General of People’s Government of Guangdong Province, and Prof. Li Ping, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee.

Vice Governor Zhao Yufang asked about Academician Su Qiang’s health and living conditions. She pointed out that Academician Su Qiang is a pioneer in the field of rare earth research in China. The academician work station set up by his research team in Guzhen, Zhongshan City, has made a great contribution to the technological breakthroughs in energy saving and environmental protection of the local lighting industry. His dedication to teaching and research is admirable, and his academic achievements have won high praises from scholars at home and abroad.
Academician Su Qiang thanked the provincial and university leadership for their care and support. He said that Guangdong’s rich rare earth resources are ranked top among the five southern provinces in China, spreading across the east, west, south, north and central part of the province, with both light and heavy rare earth elements. He hoped to set up an excellent research team and build a platform in his lifetime, study how to develop, utilize and protect Guangdong’s rare earth resources, build an international rare earth brand, and make contributions to the country and society.
Vice Governor Zhao Yufang said that the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and the Guangdong Provincial Government will study the opinions and suggestions made by Academician Su Qiang, carry out scientific exploration, development and protection of rare earth resources in Guangdong, and coordinate relevant departments to study the effective use of rare earth resources.
Deputy Secretary Li Ping expressed that SYSU will make utmost efforts to promote the effective protection, development and utilization of rare earth resources, and make greater contributions to Guangdong province and the country.
