On the morning of May 27, The Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, UK, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and delivered a speech on education and exchange. Prof. Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU, met with Dr Vince Cable, accompanied by Dr. Catherine Raines, Minister and Director-General of Trade & Investment for China; Mr. Alastair Morgan, Consul-General of British Consulate-General Guangzhou; Mr. Angus Bjarnason, Consul (Cultural and Education) of British Consulate-General Guangzhou; Prof. Dame Julia King, Vice Chancellor of Aston University, UK; Prof. Lawrence Young, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The University of Warwick, UK; Prof. Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU; Prof. Xu Ruihua, Director of Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center; and Prof. Ling Wenhua, Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange of SYSU.

During the meeting, President Xu Ningsheng extended a warm welcome to Dr Vince Cable and his delegation on behalf of SYSU, and introduced the history, development and international cooperation and exchange of SYSU. Dr Vince Cable expressed his pleasure to visit Guangzhou again after twenty years, and said that he was glad to visit SYSU.

Then, Dr Vince Cable delivered a speech to SYSU faculty and students. He introduced the present situation of higher education in the UK and the joint China-UK educational programmes. He pointed out that the UK would take measures to encourage higher education cooperation between the two countries. Through the speech and Q&A session, the faculty and students had a new understanding of China-UK educational cooperation and exchange.
After the speech, witnessed by Dr Vince Cable and President Xu Ningsheng, SYSU Vice President Zhu Xiping and Warwick University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Lawrence Young signed a MOU and a student exchange agreement between the two universities. In addition, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center also signed a MOU with The University of Warwick.
On the same day, Dr Vince Cable and President Xu Ningsheng also attended the signing ceremony of MOU between the National Supercomputer Centre in Guangzhou, China and the Hartree Centre at the Science and Technology Facilities Council, UK.
