Academician Yang Huanming from BGI visited SYSU

On the morning of May 28, Academician Yang Huanming from BGI came to SYSU to visit National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ), accompanied by SYSU Assistant President Xia Lianghui and Director of NSCC-GZ Yue Xuefeng. SYSU President Xu Ningsheng and Vice President Li Mengfeng met with Academician Yang Huanming, and held a discussion on applications of supercomputer in the field of biological research.

Academician Yang Huanming said that he was deeply impressed by NSCC-GZ, the world-class supercomputer center. This is a century of informatization and big data, and combining data processing methods of informatics with biology is a development trend. He also expressed the hope to collaborate with SYSU.

President Xu Ningsheng and Academician Yang Huanming reached a consensus on collaboration between SYSU and BGI, and agreed to speed up the implementation process.

Academician Yang Huanming also held a meeting with experts and scholars in life sciences, medical sciences and pharmaceutical sciences. Vice President Li Mengfeng and Director Yuan Xuefeng respectively introduced SYSU’s scientific research and NSCC-GZ. The attendees expressed their ideas about collaborations between big data and life sciences, as well as medical and pharmaceutical sciences, and held in-depth discussions with Academician Yang Huanming.
 

In the afternoon on North Campus, Academician Yang Huanming delivered a lecture on “genomics and the century of biology”. He talked about the history and development of genomics, and expressed his expectations for young scholars. The lecture attracted more than 300 faculty and students from medical sciences and life sciences at SYSU.
