President Xu Ningsheng introduced the history of SYSU and medical education as well. Boji Medical College, the origin of medical education at SYSU, was the first medical school to practice and teach western medicine in China. It was in this college that Dr. Sun Yat-sen studied medicine and engaged in revolutionary work. After 148 years of concerted efforts by several generations, medical education at SYSU have developed distinctive features. The quality of clinical teaching has kept improving. He hoped that the Competition will continue to improve medical students’ innovative abilities and clinical competence. He expressed that SYSU will give full support to the Competition and provide quality services for all participants.

Mr. Zhang Daliang pointed out that medical education involves people’s livelihood and is facing new opportunities and challenges in the process of our modernization. Medical education should put virtue first and emphasize clinical abilities. First, a good doctor should be professional, be highly responsible for the patients and the society, and serve the patients wholeheartedly; and second, a good doctor should have excellent competence, master medical theories and skills, and could provide high-quality services. Mr. Zhang Daliang hoped that medical colleges can take the Competition as an opportunity to strengthen the teaching hospital and faculty development, enhance professionalism, medical ethics and clinical skills of medical students, and lay a solid foundation for training “five star” doctors with virtues and superb skills. He expected that medical students will practice core socialist values, develop humanistic qualities, strive to improve abilities, and become an excellent medical professional, a promoter of health care and a contributor to the realization of our Chinese Dream.
