Recently, Zheng Detao, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, and Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU, inspected the work of SYSU-CMU Shunde International Joint Research Institute (JRI), accompanied by Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU, and Ji Hongbing, Director of Department of Local Services and Industry-University-Research Collaborations of Office of Scientific Research and Development.

Secretary Zheng Detao and President Xu Ningsheng inspected the construction progress of JRI’s teaching research building, faculty apartment and student dormitory, and inquired in detail about the work of JRI administrators after they moved in. Liang Weidong, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Foshan Municipal Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shunde District Committee, Huang Xizhong, Mayor of Shunde District, and SYSU leadership also attended the work report meeting.
Secretary Zheng Detao thanked Shunde district government for its support for the project. He put forward three requirements for JRI. First, the remaining part of the project should be accomplished by backward scheduling and leave no regrets. Second, optimize the top-down design, take national objectives and local industries into consideration in scientific, technological and industrial innovation. Third, implement scientific management.
President Xu Ningsheng affirmed JRI’s work and made arrangement for JRI’s development. He pointed out that JRI should lead innovation with high and new technology; make plan to build national science and technology innovation base and research institutions; build patent pools with autonomous intellectual property rights, try out incubation and innovation mechanism, and maximize the market value of patents.
The unveiling ceremony and foundation laying ceremony of JRI was held in November, 2012. JRI administrators officially moved in on March 24, 2014. JRI will welcome its first group of 71 postgraduate students in May and 200 postgraduate and doctoral students by the end of this year. At present, JRI has 35 researchers and has introduced 2 high-end innovation teams. Equipped with electronics and computer laboratories, JRI has contacted large enterprises including Midea Group to jointly apply for projects of industry-university-research fund at the provincial and ministerial level.
