On March 17, Professor Joseph Puglisi, Chair of Department of Structural Biology, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Assistant Professor Elisabetta Viani, Department of Structural Biology, Stanford University School of Medicine, visited SYSU. President Xu Ningsheng met with Professor Joseph Puglisi in the VIP Lounge of Zhongshan Building, accompanied by Vice President Zhu Xiping and Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange Ling Wenhua.

President Xu Ningsheng extended a warm welcome to Professor Joseph Puglisi, and introduced SYSU’s history, campuses, international cooperation in running schools and large scientific research projects. President Xu expressed the hope to jointly build research and education demonstration center on the basis of present collaborations between SYSU and Stanford University.
Professor Joseph Puglisi thanked President Xu Ningsheng for the warm reception, saying that SYSU’s beautiful campus and dedicated faculty and students left him a deep impression. Professor Puglisi believed that Stanford University and SYSU had good prospects for cooperation and he expected that the two sides would formulate cooperative plans for the next step.

On the same day, Vice President Yan Guangmei and Vice President Li Mengfeng met with the guests on different occasions respectively and exchanged opinions on deepening mutual cooperation. Zhang Qi, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange and Zhu Changping, Deputy Director of Office of Medical Science attended the meeting. Professor Joseph Puglisi and Assistant Professor Elisabetta Viani also visited School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, and discussed with Wu Chuanbin, Deputy Dean of School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Liu Qiang, Director of International Office of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital.
In the afternoon, Professor Joseph Puglisi and Assistant Professor Elisabetta Viani respectively gave a lecture on “Dynamics of Protein Synthesis” and "Initiation of HIV Reverse Transcription" in the Medical Sciences Building on North Campus. The lectures, moderated by Professor Gao Song from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, were well received with frequent interactions between the speakers and the audience.
Stanford University was founded in 1885 and ranks 4th in 2013-2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In 2012, SYSU introduced "New Anti-cancer Targeted Drugs R&D Team" led by winner of 2006 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Professor Roger D. Kornberg from Department of Structural Biology, Stanford University School of Medicine. The team has been selected into the third batch of “Guangdong Innovation Research Team”.
