On March 3-4, a delegation from Vanderbilt University and Wesleyan College visited SYSU. Members of the delegation included Vivia Fowler, Provost of Wesleyan College and Vice President of Academic Affairs; Steve Farr, Vice President of Wesleyan College; Vanessa Beasley, Director of American Studies and Associate Professor of Communication Studies of Vanderbilt University; and faculty members and staff of international office from the two universities.

On the afternoon of March 4, SYSU Vice President Yan Guangmei had a brief meeting with the guests in the VIP Lounge of Zhongshan Building. He extended a warm welcome to the delegation. He pointed out that SYSU had historic ties with Vanderbilt University and Wesleyan College, and expected to have more collaborations and exchanges with the two universities.
Provost Fowler gave a general introduction to Wesleyan College. She was impressed by the beautiful campus of SYSU and hoped to have more opportunities to communicate with SYSU faculty and students. Director Beasley stressed that Vanderbilt University values the partnership with SYSU and there are many possibilities of collaborations in humanities, social sciences and medicine.

On the same day, the General Education Lecture Series — American Culture was held in the Library on South Campus. The lectures were hosted by the University General Education Unit and Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, and organized by SYSU Youth Association. The professors in the delegation gave 10 lectures, covering American politics, religion, culture, society, health and science. The lecture series was welcomed by SYSU faculty and students.
During the visit, the delegation also held talks with representatives from Liberal Arts College, and School of Sociology and Anthropology and exchanged views on teaching cooperation and student exchange, providing a good foundation for future collaborations.

Vanderbilt University was founded in 1873 and has ten colleges and schools. It is renowned for its high education quality and strong research capabilities, and ranked 17th among American universities by
U.S. News & World Report in 2013. Its famous alumni included Charlie Soong, father of the three Soong sisters. Since 2007, the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University established ties with the Institute of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage of SYSU, conducting joint research in folklore and the protection of intangible cultural heritage. The two universities plan to sign an memorandum of understanding this year to formally establish cooperative relations at the university level.
Wesleyan College is a private women’s college founded in 1836 and the first college in the world to grant academic degrees to female students. It is regarded as one of the best colleges of general education in the United States. It is also the alma mater of the three Soong sisters: Soong Ai-ling, Soong Ching-ling and Soong May-ling.
