The Ministry of Science and Technology held expert panel discussion on the development plan of National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou at SYSU

On November 1, the Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization of the Ministry of Science and Technology held an expert panel discussion on the development plan of National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ) at SYSU. Yang Xianwu, Deputy Director-General of the Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization; Xia Lianghui, Assistant President of SYSU; Jing Guangjun, Deputy Director of Bureau of Science and Information Technology of Guangzhou Municipality; Li Nan, Deputy Dean of College of Computer of NUDT; eight expert professors of related fields; persons in charge of the Office of Supercomputing of SYSU and Guangzhou Supercomputing Center (GSC); and leaders of related provincial and municipal departments, attended the meeting.
The expert panel discussion
The experts inspected the construction of the GSC building and the installment of Tianhe-2 supercomputer system, and listened to the report on NSCC-GZ’s development plan and SYSU’s talent training plan in the field of supercomputing. They inquired and discussed about the applications of supercomputing to meet Guangdong’s needs in industrial design, animation rendering, financial analysis, weather forecast and information safety, as well as the Center’s management structure, running mode, research and talent training system. The experts all agreed that GSC has completed the environment construction and computing platform construction according to the original plan and is ready for running and service. The meeting adopted the development plan and the Ministry of of Science and Technology will grant the plaque of “National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou” soon.
At present, there are four national supercomputing centers in Tianjin, Shenzhen, Jinan and Changsha. The National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou will be the fifth one that integrates high performance computing, mass data processing and information management services. It will provide powerful engine for the economic and social development in Guangzhou and Guangdong with extensive applications in advanced manufacturing industries such as automobile, shipbuilding and major equipment, as well as strategic emerging industries including new generation information technology, industrial design, online game and animation, life and health, biomedicine, etc. Meanwhile, it will be applied in wisdom city and many research fields, playing an important role in promoting informatization.
