NSFC Deputy Director Academician Gao Wen led a group to conduct survey and research in SYSU

On the morning of October 18, Academician Gao Wen, Deputy Director of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), led a group to conduct survey and research in SYSU. The group visited the the Pilot System of Guangzhou Supercomputing Center (GSC) and held a meeting to discuss the construction of GSC and big data research. The meeting was presided over by Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU. The attendants also included Qin Yuwen, Executive Deputy Director of Department of Information Sciences of NSFC; Zheng Yonghe, Deputy Director of Bureau of Policy and Deputy Director of Bureau of Planning of NSFC; Liu Ke, Division Director of Department of Information Sciences of NSFC; Xia Lianghui, Assistant President of SYSU; Lai Jianhuang, Dean of School of Information Science and Technology of SYSU; Zhang Jun, Executive Dean of School of Advanced Computing of SYSU; Luo Xiaonan, Director of National Digital Home Engineering and Technology Research Center; Ren Jian, Professor of School of Life Sciences; Zhou Fan, Deputy Director of GSC; and Liu Mei, Deputy Director of Division of Basic Research, Office of Scientific Research and Development of SYSU.

President Xu Ningsheng extended a warm welcome to Deputy Director Gao Wen and his group, and thanked NSFC for its consistent concern and support. He said that with the strong support of NSFC in recent years, SYSU has made rapid development in basic research, which is mainly reflected in the recipients of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and the winners of National Natural Science Award. The next step is to establish new engineering application disciplines and focus on major scientific and engineering issues. GSC is a large scientific projet jointly built by Guangdong Province, Guangzhou City, NUDT and SYSU. We will make our contributions to the project.

At the meeting, Dean Zhang Jun reported on the construction of the Research Institute of Supercomputing and the plan to build smart Guangdong; Professor Ren Jian reported on the preparation of CNBC. The attendants had an in-depth discussion and made constructive proposals regarding the construction, application and operation of GSC.

Finally, Deputy Director Gao Wen stressed the importance of GSC and affirmed SYSU’s plan to engage in the construction of smart Guangdong, establishment of bioinformatics center and big data research. Meanwhile, he said that NSFC attached great importance to GSC and hoped to establish a special channel of communication between NSFC and SYSU to further discuss the construction and project support of GSC.
