Associate Professor Zhang Zhian, Deputy Dean of School of Communication and Design and winner of the Contribution Award in career counseling, talked about his understanding of how to provide assistance for students’ career development. He pointed out that teachers’ cultivation of the students is the most important factor in improving students’ employment competitiveness, so the teachers’ sense of mission for students’ career development should be implemented in every class, in their cultivation of students’ capabilities of judgment, cognition and logical thinking. Meanwhile, internship is very important for graduates. We need to go beyond Guangdong to the whole country and improve geographical distribution of our graduate employment. We also need to strengthen the relationship between teaching and internship by enhancing students’ practical ability in class so as to improve their employment competitiveness. Student employment needs a brand, and teachers should have the courage to make their own contributions to the brand.
The conference also invited Dr. Wu Yin, President of MyCOS Consulting, to analyze the Annual Report on Social Demand and Training Quality of SYSU in 2011 and 2012.
Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng congratulated the award-wining units and individuals. He pointed out that employment work is essentially one of the university’s core projects, and universities at home and abroad attach great significance to student employment and career development and try to make use of all possible resources. We should view employment work from the perspective of talent cultivation and raise the overall level of teaching because this is the most fundamental basis of enhancing the competitiveness of graduates. The data and results of The Annual Report on Social Demand and Training Quality of SYSU, jointly conducted by SYSU and MyCOS, are convincing. Many indicators in the report are positive, however, there are some problems in classroom teaching and practice teaching. We need to find the weaknesses and strive to do a better job in the future. Student employment, as the last standard to test the quality of talent cultivation, involves the whole university and relevant departments. Therefore, we must attach great importance to employment and enhance our students’ competitiveness in all aspects.
Deputy Secretary and Vice President Zhu Kongjun fully affirmed the employment work for 2013 graduates. He said that the employment work is not only about conscience and skills but also about hard work. All units must take everything and every job seriously, because this is our conscience; with high-standard policy requirements, it is a skilled job; with a lot of tedious data processing, it is hard work. As for the employment work for 2014 graduates, he put forward four requirements: first, all units must strengthen top-level design and overall planning; second, strengthen career counseling and timely adjust the graduates’ and their parents’ expectations; third, enhance market construction to improve employment rate and quality; fourth, actively guide the employment flow of graduates, pay particular attention to the flow of industries and geographical distributions, and encourage the graduates to pursue academic study and research.
Staff members in Career Development Counseling Center introduced the recent career talks and job fairs held at SYSU, and explained in detail the service of checking information about graduates, contract signing procedures, postponement of employment, employment dispatch, and the operation of employment management system. Relevant persons in charge of the Office of Security and Sun Yat-sen University Archives also introduced key issues including Hukou transfer, archives arrangement and mailing for graduates.
