On September 24, the 2nd session of the 8th Teachers Congress and the 19th Labor Union Congress of Sun Yat-sen University was held in K.K. Leung Hall on South Campus. More than 300 official representatives, specially invited representatives and non-voting delegates from 49 delegations attended the session. Attendees included the University leadership Secretary Zheng Detao, President Xu Ningsheng, Executive Vice President Wang Jianping, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng, Vice President Yan Guangmei, Deputy Secretary Li Ping, Deputy Secretary and Vice President Zhu Kongjun, Vice President Li Mengfeng, Vice President Wei Minghai, Deputy Secretary and Secretary of Discipline Inspection Commission Guo Yaping, Vice President Li Shanmin and Vice President Zhu Xiping, as well as Academician Su Qiang. The conference was presided over by Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng.
At the conference, representatives listened to the Report on the Work of Sun Yat-sen University delivered by President Xu Ningsheng, the Report on the Financial Work of Sun Yat-sen University delivered by Vice President Li Shanmin, the Report on the Personnel and Talent Work of Sun Yat-sen University delivered by Vice President Wei Minghai, the Report on the Logistics Work of Sun Yat-sen University delivered by Deputy Secretary and Vice President Zhu Kongjun, and the Report on the Work of the Teachers Congress and the Labor Union Congress by Deputy Secretary Li Ping. The conference also commended Cheng Yuehua, a teacher from the School of Mathematics and Computational Sciences, who won the “Excellent Proposal Award”, and the Human Resources Department and Faculty of Medical Sciences, which won the title of “Advanced Unit of Implementing the Proposal” of the 1st Session of the 8th Teachers Congress.

President Xu Ningsheng analyzed the current situation faced by the University and introduced the work of the University in 2012 and 2013. He emphasized that with joint efforts of faculty, staff and students, the University showed a better development momentum. We should make more efforts to keep up with the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province. We need to reinforce reform, enhance innovation, motivate the whole university, work hard for the strategic goal of constructing a world-class university, and make new contributions to the educational cause and the social requirements of the country and Guangdong.

Secretary Zheng Detao delivered the concluding speech at the conference. He pointed out that the fact that this conference was held during the ongoing “mass line” campaign was a concrete approach of the University to adapt to the new characteristics and new requirements of the mass work in the new situation, to learn from the mass and to receive supervision from the mass. Secretary Zheng Detao stressed that through the Teachers Congress, we should enhance scientific policy making and democratic management, and push the various departments of the University to change their working style, improve working level and promote the construction of harmonious campus. He also encouraged all representatives to further strengthen their sense of responsibility and urgency, make concerted efforts, and strive hard to advance all the work of the University.

After the conference, the delegations held group discussions about the Report on the Work of Sun Yat-sen University, the Report on the Financial Work of Sun Yat-sen University, the Report on the Personnel and Talent Work of Sun Yat-sen University, and the Report on the Logistics Work of Sun Yat-sen University. The delegates discussed and reviewed the Report on the Work of the Teachers Congress and the Labor Union Congress, the Report on the Work of Proposals, and the Report on 2012 Revenue and Expenditure of the Labor Union. They reviewed and passed the Guide on Construction Assessment Standard of “Home of Faculty and Staff” of the Second-Level Labor Unions of Sun Yat-sen University (Opinion Soliciting Draft), and Methods of Medical Subsidies for Major Diseases for Faculty and Staff of Sun Yat-sen University (Opinion Soliciting Draft of the 2013 Revised Version). The University leadership and heads of the functional departments respectively attended the group discussions and listened to the opinions. SYSU Labor Union will summarize the opinions and suggestions offered in the group discussions, and convene a report meeting with the heads of the delegations.
