Mr. Chen Jian, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited SYSU and delivered a speech

Mr. Chen Jian, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited SYSU and delivered a speech entitled “International Situation and Major Power Relationship” on the morning of August 30. Before the speech, Professor Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU, met with Mr. Chen Jian and extended a warm welcome to him.

The speech was presided over by Vice President Zhu Xiping in Swasey Hall on South Campus. Ms. Cui Danqing, Deputy Inspector of Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou Municipal Government; Ms. Liu Ronghua, Division Chief of Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou Municipal Government; Ms. Gu Wenli, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange of SYSU; and nearly 300 teachers and students attended the speech.

Mr. Chen Jian talked about international situation from three aspects: globalization, multi-polarization and informationization. With rich experience and extensive knowledge in international diplomacy, his comments on international events and reply to questions from teachers and students received loud applauses from the audience.

Mr. Chen Jian graduated from the English Department at Fudan University and later studied at Beijing Foreign Studies University. In 1996, he joined the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations (1992-1994), Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs (1996-1998), Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Japan (vice-ministerial level) (1998-2001), Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (2001-2007) and President of U.N. Association of China (2007-2012). Currently, he is a senior consultant of U.N. Association of China, and serves concurrently as Dean of the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China and Director of the United Nations Research Center at Fudan University.
