President Xu Ningsheng delivered an address at the opening ceremony. He said that, coming to SYSU is a starting point to realize the ideals of life. It is the strategic goal of SYSU as well as the pursuit of every SYSUer to build SYSU into a world-class university with extensive international influence, where the humanities, sciences, medicine and engineering can integrate and develop while retaining their distinctive characteristics. A world-class university should cultivate world-class students, and the goal of the University is to cultivate academic elites, industry leaders and social elites. The students should work hard to realize this goal. The University advocates “dedication to teaching, students and learning”, the students should cherish the precious time and dedicate themselves to study, follow the university motto written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and take it as priority to gain knowledge, pursue academics, develop skills and serve the country. President Xu Ningsheng encouraged the students to have lofty ideals, study hard and become SYSUers who will make great contributions to the development of the country and the progress of human civilization.
