On June 24-27, the four-day SYSU Commencement was held in K.K. Leung Hall. The “positive energy” we have gained from the last lesson at the University will motivate us in the days to come.

Let’s sing the University Anthem once again!

President Xu Ningsheng: Be socially responsible “bookworms”.

After the first session of the commencement, President Xu Ningsheng met with student representatives from the Liberal Arts College. He said that, SYSU need socially responsible “bookworms”, who will become leading figures in their fields. The “bookworms” of SYSU should aim high and assume the social responsibility to build our country.

Your words give us confidence.

Your gaze gives us courage.

Your smile gives us strength.

The President greets Li Naiqi, an outstanding undergraduate from the School of Information Science and Technology.

At the second session of the commencement held on the morning of June 27, Li Naiqi, sitting in his wheelchair, was the first student to receive the Bachelor’s Degree. In 2009, he excelled in the National College Entrance Exam and was enrolled in the School of Information Science and Technology. He once said: “Choosing computer as my major is to break through the limit of human being.” Now he has been accepted into the postgraduate program at SYSU and will attend the IJCAI as first author in August.

This summer over 10,000 students are graduating from SYSU. At the commencement held in K.K. Encouraged by his precept and the advice from professors and alumni representatives, the graduates are ready to embark on a new journey.

Your firm handshake encourages me to forge ahead.

At the solemn and grand commencement, the officiating professors recalled their own graduation many years ago at SYSU. Professor Huang Tianji graduated from the Department of Chinese in 1956. There was no commencement in the 1950s, and the University would host a graduation dinner. Professor Wang Bin graduated from the Department of English in 1967. There was no commencement in those years. As for today’s commencement, he is impressed with the newly added “speech by alumni representative”.

Alumni representative Mr. Lai Ganfeng, who graduated from Lingnan College in 1998, said in his speech:
Only by going out bravely can you come back perfectly.

Alumni representative Mr. Shi Shaobin, who graduated in 1989, said in his speech:
Do things that cannot be replaced by others.

Alumni representative Mr. Xu Liangjie, who graduated from the School of Information Management in 1991, said in his speech:
If you have a dream, the whole world will make way for you.

Alumni representative Mr. Zhu Yongping, who graduated from the Department of Law in 1987, said in his speech:
Today is the last lesson before you set foot in the society.

Alumni representative Mr. Zhang Jieming, who graduated from the School of International Business in 2010, said in his speech:
Believe in yourself that you have the ability to lead the world and change the world.
