On April 23, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) signed a collaboration agreement on nuclear power “engineer education” with China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGN) in the VIP Lounge of Zhongshan Building. Xu Ningsheng, President of SYSU, Wei Zhonglin, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, and He Yu, Secretary of Party Leadership Group and Chairman of CGN, attended the signing ceremony and delivered a speech respectively. The ceremony was presided over by Wang Biao, Chinese Dean of Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology of SYSU. Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU, and Yue Linkang, Chief Economist of CGN, signed the collaboration agreement.

President Xu Ningsheng said in his speech that the signing of this collaboration agreement is a step further on the basis of prior cooperation between the two sides, and it is an important milestone of joint education between SYSU and enterprises. SYSU adheres to the idea of closely connecting discipline construction, major national needs and high-quality international resources, and strives to make significant contribution to the development of Guangdong’s nuclear industrial chain and China’s nuclear industry.

On behalf of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, Deputy Director-General Wei Zhonglin congratulated both sides on adopting the university-enterprise joint talent cultivation mode, and praised the collaboration in nuclear power “engineer education” as an order-oriented, high-level exploration with international characteristics. He said that under the implementation of the education development goal of “building Guangdong into an advanced educational province, striving to become an advanced area of education modernization, and creating the southern education highlands”, the Department of Education of Guangdong Province will provide adequate and comprehensive support for both sides to innovate university-enterprise joint cultivation of internationalized talents, and promote university-enterprise collaborative innovation of science and technology.

Chairman He Yu said that developing nuclear power is an inevitable and intrinsic requirement of green economy, in which talent cultivation plays an important part. With vision, SYSU has set up joint education program with France, a technological leader in this field, laying a good foundation for our country’s nuclear power development, especially in terms of talent cultivation. As the world’s largest nuclear power manufacturer, CGN is willing to establish a strong-strong cooperation with SYSU and French engineer schools, meet the talent need in nuclear power development, and open its door to provide support and service for SYSU.

Since 2011, CGN has negotiated with SYSU for several times about collaboration in talent cultivation, and ultimately the two sides reached an agreement at the end of November, 2012. Different from the previous simple recruitment of graduates and cooperation in such areas as nuclear power technology and nuclear power research and development, this time both sides will rely on CGN’s industrial advantages, learn from the French engineer elite training mode, jointly establish the industry-university-research practice and internship base, and cultivate international high-end talents who can engage in scientific research, teaching, engineering technology and technology management in the fields of nuclear engineering construction and management, environmental safety management, and nuclear power plant operation. In accordance with the collaboration agreement, CGN will take in students from Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology for a three-year internship at the stage of engineer education, offer scholarships, teaching awards and financial support for discipline construction, and recruit qualified graduates.

This collaboration is an important part of the substantive progress of Sino-French intergovernmental cooperation and nuclear power industry cooperation. It also provides a broader space for both the university and the enterprise. On the one hand, CGN will increase the depth and width of cooperation with EDF, AREVA and CEA in France; on the other hand, it will also become a new way for the university to further reserve and introduce high-quality nuclear power talents, raise the quality of joint talent cultivation, and improve joint cultivation mode.
