SYSU signed a MOU on Academic Cooperation with UoG

On March 21-22, Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal of the University of Glasgow (UoG), led a delegation to visit SYSU. Members of the delegation also included Anna Dominiczak, Vice Principal and Head of College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, Jonathan Cooper, Dean of Graduate Studies in the College of Science & Engineering, International Dean for East Asia, and Matthew Walters, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology.

On March 21st, SYSU Vice President Yan Guangmei met with the guests in the Foreign Guest Reception Room on North Campus and expressed his support for the cooperation between the two universities. He also hoped that SYSU and UoG could expand areas of cooperation and strengthen exchange of students and scholars on the basis of present collaboration projects. The delegation discussed with representatives from Dean’s office of Medical Education Affairs and School of Public Health respectively over specific collaborations such as student exchange and joint postgraduate program. The guests also visited Cancer Center, Hospital of Stomatology and Zhongshan School of Medicine.

On the afternoon of March 22nd, the Signing Ceremony of MOU on Academic Cooperation between University of Glasgow and Sun Yat-sen University was held in the VIP Hall of Zhongshan Building, South Campus. On behalf of SYSU, Vice President Yan Guangmei signed the MOU with Professor Anton Muscatelli, and summarized the two-day talks. Both sides planned to start the short-term exchange program for medical undergraduates and joint master’s program in public health as soon as possible. They also planned to jointly hold a seminar on stroke in the first half of this year. Besides, the two universities will promote further cooperation in cancer research, stomatology, computer science, earth sciences, etc.

Ling Wenhua, Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, Xiao Haipeng, Dean of Office of Medical Education Affairs, Hao Yuantao, Dean of School of Public Health, Lin Huancai, Deputy Secretary of Hospital Stomatology, Qian Chaonan, Assistant Director of Cancer Center, Professor Pei Zhong from The First Affiliated Hospital, attended the meeting.

Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow (UoG) is the fourth oldest public university in the English-speaking world (the first three are University of Oxford, University of Cambridge and University of St Andrews). UoG is also a founder member of Universities 21, an international grouping of universities, and a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK research universities. There are currently four colleges in UoG, namely, The College of Arts, The College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, The College of Science and Engineering and The College of Social Sciences, containing 27 schools and institutes, covering a variety of disciplines such as languages, arts, medicine, veterinary science, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, management, education, law, social sciences, political science, etc. There are a total of 23,162 students, including 16,916 undergraduates and 6,246 postgraduates and 5,967 staff (statistics of March 2012) in UoG. Its notable alumni include Adam Smith, the “father of economics”, who later served as honorary president of University of Glasgow.

Currently, SYSU and UoG have been cooperating in the fields of China Scholarship Council PhD joint program, joint undergraduate program, students’ overseas study, etc.
