A Delegation Led by Vice Provost Health of University of British Columbia Visited SYSU

On March 15th, Gavin Stuart, Vice Provost Health of University of British Columbia (UBC) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, led a five-people medical delegation to visit SYSU. Vice President Li Mengfeng had a cordial meeting with the guests in Zhongshan School of Medicine. Zhang Qi, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange was also present at the meeting.

Vice President Li Mengfeng warmly welcomed the delegation and introduced the general situation of SYSU, especially the long history and preponderant disciplines in medical sciences. Vice Provost Health Gavin Stuart introduced the basic situation of the Faculty of Medicine of UBC and said that with advantages in tumor, cardiovascular diseases and mental health, UBC hoped to cooperate with SYSU in these fields.

On the same day, the delegation also visited School of Public Health, Guanghua School of Stomatology and Hospital of Stomatology. They discussed issues on research cooperation and student exchange with Chen Wen, Deputy Dean of School of Public Health; Ling Junqi, Dean of Guanghua School of Stomatology and President of Hospital of Stomatology; and other relevant teachers. Ling Wenhua, Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange; Zhang Qi, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange; Wang Shuzhen, Deputy Director of Dean’s Office of Medical Education Affairs, also had an in-depth communication with the guests about student exchange, joint-training programs and the education of medical students.

Established in 1908, UBC is the university with the longest history in British Columbia. It became the independent University of British Columbia in 1915. It constitutes the Ivy League of Canada together with McGill University, University of Toronto and Queen’s University. According to the rankings by several authoritative institutions (including ARWU, QS and THE), UBC ranks top 50 worldwide and top 3 in Canada. According to the 2012 QS Canadian University Rankings: Medicine, the Faculty of Medicine of UBC ranks 4th.
