In March, Beijing is permeated with a warm and festive atmosphere as the successful convening of the NPC and CPPCC meetings has written a new chapter for national development. On the morning of March 11th, Sun Yat-sen University and Guangdong Dahuanong Animal Health Products Co., Ltd. officially signed an industry-university-research collaboration agreement in Beijing, which takes developing the South China Sea’s marine ecological industry as its core. Xu Ningsheng, NPC Deputy, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of SYSU; Lin Haoran, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor at SYSU; Xia Lianghui, Assistant President of SYSU; Wen Pengcheng, NPC Deputy and Chairman of Guangdong Wens Food Group Co., Ltd.; Chen Ruiai, NPC Deputy, Vice Chairman and General Manager of Guangdong Dahuanong Animal Health Products Co., Ltd., attended the ceremony.

Marine resource development is a national strategy in the new period. The18th CPC National Congress has pointed out the need to improve the ability of marine resources development and construct a marine power. On February 6th, the executive meeting of the State Council passed Several Opinions on Promoting Sustainable and Healthy Development of Marine Fishery. In the Government Work Report at the first session of the 12th NPC on March 5th, Premier Wen Jiabao pointed it out that we should strengthen marine integrated management, develop marine economy and improve the ability of marine resources development.

The School of Life Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University, is one of the major bases for study and technological innovation of China’s agriculture and marine biotechnology, and has made a series of high-level achievements in the fields of fish breeding, disease control of economic aquatic animals, the exploration and utilization of marine living resources. Guangdong Dahuanong Animal Health Products Co., Ltd. is a listed company and a high-tech enterprise engaged in the manufacturing, production and marketing of biotechnological products and animal health products including poultry and aquatic vaccine, holding a domestically leading position in the field of veterinary biological products.

Since 2006, SYSU and Dahuanong have carried out fruitful collaborations in animal disease control, jointly constructed the Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory, carried out the study of major serious infectious diseases of animals, and achieved significant results. In order to further implement the spirit of the 18th CPC National Congress and the first session of the 12th NPC, on the basis of previous collaborations, both sides planned to carry out closer industry-university-research coordinative innovation cooperation centering on the utilization of South China Sea’s marine living resources.

The strategic cooperation between the two sides will give full play to SYSU’s technology and talent advantages in the field of marine biotechnology, use the achievement transformation platform and financial strength of Dahuanong, and jointly establish a marine biotechnology coordinative innovation union. The in-depth collaboration will speed up the process of building SYSU into a high-level university, boost the industrial optimization of Dahuanong, provide technology reserves for the utilization of South China Sea’s marine resources, and promote the sustainable and healthy development of marine ecological industry.
