2013 Lingnan New Year Forum (Shenzhen) Held

On January 13, 2013, the Lingnan New Year Forum (Shenzhen) was held at the hall of Shenzhen Special Zone Press Tower. Professor Liu Mingkang, former Chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission and Honorary Dean of Lingnan (University) College; Mr. Alvin Chua, Executive Director and Head of Asia of F&C Asset Management Asia Ltd; Mr. Li Wanshou, President of Shenzhen Capital Group Co. Ltd; Mr. Xiao Yafei, Director of Shenzhen Municipal Government Financial Services Office; Prof. Wang Xi, Deputy Dean of Lingnan (University) College are invited to deliver speeches on various economic topics. The forum was chaired by Professor Xu Xinzhong, Dean of Lingnan (University) College. Attendees of the New Year Forum include Mr. Zhang Wenbiao, Party Secretary of Lingnan; Professor Shu Yuan, Vice Chairman of Board of Trustees of Lingnan (University) College and Chairman of Lingnan Alumni Association; Deputy Dean Professor Li Shenglan; Deputy Dean Zhang Yanmei; Mr. Yu Liren, Vice Party Secretary of Lingnan; Mr. Qiu Hong, Chairman of Shenzhen Lingnan Alumni Association; Mr. Qin Minjun, Chairman of Shenzhen EDP Alumni Association and Shenzhen EMBA Alumni Association, etc.

Professor Shu Yuan, Chairman of Lingnan Alumni Association makes the opening remarks. He highly appreciates the contributions of Shenzhen Alumni Association in establishing a networking platform for all alumni and in supporting the development of Lingnan. He also promises that Lingnan Alumni Association will continue to support the development of Lingnan’s young alumni and alumni enterprises. Then Professor Liu Mingkang delivers the first speech. He reviews the significant events in 2012 which will have far-reaching influences on directing China’s future development. He points out that the significance of the 18th CPC National Congress and China’s Central Economic Work Conference on guiding China’s reforms, and the effect of national politics, internet and ecological environmental issues on the country and its economic growth. Prof. Liu also comments on issues of territory, international political environment and international security. At last, Prof. Liu points out that China’s future development should rely on the correct judgments of current situation and farsighted strategic planning.

Mr. Alvin Chua points out from the perspective of global economic and financial market trends that deflation might happen because growth rate is hard to expect in the European economic zone in the following 5 to 10 years. Special concerns should be given to those enterprises with strong competitiveness and creativeness. Mr. Li Wanshou elaborates in his speech the way of China’s future economic development from five aspects, namely, the Well-off in China, the Ecological Environment in China, the Internet in China, the Reform Opportunity and Cultural Reinforcement. Mr. Xiao Yafei comments mainly on the future development trend of Qianhai, a new financial zone neighboring Hong Kong. He points out the financial development of Shenzhen should rely on innovation and cross-border financing. The innovation highlights should be to strengthen finance and IT cooperation, including introducing various financial derivative products. Professor Wang Xi elaborates the Two Wonders and Seven Incentives in China’s economic development and puts forward 7 issues concerning the current policy of massive investment stimulus, namely, the imbalance of high-speed growth, the ineffective investment and redundant construction projects, the local financing credit, the income disparity, the private investment, inflation and the market economy reform philosophy. Prof. Wang also anticipates the short-term economic form and long-term economic pattern after the 18th CPC National Congress.

Mr. Qiu Hong, Chairman of Shenzhen Lingnan Alumni Association also introduces the scholarship scheme and donation channel. He calls for all alumni to support the development of Lingnan in various ways. In the end, Mr. Zhang Wenbiao, Party Secretary of Lingnan thanks the 5 speakers for their excellent speeches and professional contributions on the current situation, economic judgment and future economic prospects. Mr. Zhang expresses his sincere wishes for Lingnan’s alumni to make greater progress in the future.
