UTS Delegation Visits SYSU

A delegation from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) headed by Professor William Purcell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (International and Development), and Mr. Leo Mian Liu, Director of International Engagement, visited Sun Yat-sen University on the morning of January 16. Also in the delegation were Mr. Zeng Xiaolong, UTS Researcher, Advisor of Centre for Australian Studies, Honorary Professor and Adjunct Researcher of Centre for Oceanian Studies, Sun Yat-sen University, and Mr Zheng Wu, Foreign Affairs Secretary to the Chairman and Assistant Director of the Office of Kingold Group Companies Limited.
SYSU Vice President Yan Guangmei met with the guests, accompanied by Professor Chang Chenguang, Dean of School of Foreign Languages; Associate Professor Yu Changsen, Deputy Director of Centre for Oceanian Studies; and Xu Yao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange. At the meeting, Vice President Yan Guangmei welcomed the guests and gave a general introduction of the University. Professor Purcell introduced UTS and highlighted its preponderant disciplines. Both sides exchanged views on student exchange, teacher visits, joint cultivation, joint construction of research institutions and hoped to explore cooperation in information technology, biomedical engineering, quantum computing, data mining, nursing, etc.

Professor Purcell and his entourage also attended the cooperation symposium held in VIP Longe in Zhongshan Building. Professor Chang Chenguang, Dean of School of Foreign Languages; Professor Chao Hongyang, Deputy Dean of School of Software; Associate Professor Yu Changsen, Executive Deputy Director of Centre for Oceanian Studies; Associate Professor Zhong Renxin of School of Engineering; and Xu Yao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange were present at the symposium. It is learned that Dr Zhou Zerong, Chairman of Kingold Group Companies Limited, would donate 5 million Australian dollars to set up the Australia-China Student Scholarship. Both sides hoped that the scholarship would promote joint cultivation and student exchange between the two universities.
UTS was founded in 1843 as Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts and changed to its current name in 1987. UTS is a comprehensive key university with strength in commerce, law, education, and science and technology, ranked 13th in Australian research universities in 2012 and 284th in QS World University Rankings 2012. In 1998, Sun Yat-sen University and UTS signed a memorandum for cooperation in teacher and student exchange, information sharing and collaborative research.
