At the invitation of Sun Yat-sen University, Professor William James, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, recently visited SYSU and gave a lecture. On behalf of SYSU, Vice President Yan Guangmei met with Pro-Vice-Chancellor William James on North Campus. He made a brief introduction to SYSU, especially the overall development plan of medical sciences, and discussed with Professor William James about the possibility of carrying out medical student exchanges.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor William James delivered a lecture entitled “HIV-1 infection and neutralization: The infection of macrophages by HIV-1 and its inhibition by aptamers” on North Campus. He explained to the teachers and students in SYSU the process of how HIV infected macrophages. By ingeniously employing pluripotent stem cells as a research tool and coherently raising and solving scientific issues, he demonstrated the beauty of scientific exploration and broadened their horizons. The teachers and students were deeply impressed by his humorous and vivid speech. After the lecture, Professor William James patiently answered the questions raised by the audience. The students’ active participation in Q&A also left a good impression on Pro-Vice-Chancellor William James.
Professor William James is Oxford University's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Planning and Resource Allocation. He is a distinguished Professor of Virology, a Fellow of Brasenose College, and a Fellow of the Oxford Martin School.
