The 2012 Lingnan International Advisory Board Meeting Held

On Nov. 16th, 2012, the International Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting of Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat-sen University was held at the Lingnan MBA Building, Sun Yat-sen University. In 2012, Lingnan (University) College established the International Advisory Board and invited 18 eminent global business leaders and academic leaders from leading multinational corporations and global business schools to be the board members. Prof. Xu Ningsheng, President of Sun Yat-sen University, Ms. Li Ping, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University, and Mr. James Wu, Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Lingnan (University) College, are also the Permanent Invitees to the IAB. The role of the Board is to provide advice on strategic development of Lingnan and future directions of global business education.

At the IAB meeting, 11 members and representatives were present, including Peter Sands, Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered PLC, Michael Andrew, Chairman, KPMG International, Daniel Tsai, Chairmen of Fubon Financial Holdings Co Ltd, S. P. Kothari, Associate Dean and representative of Dean David Schmittlein of MIT Sloan School of Management, and Carl Zeithaml, Dean of McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia. The IAB members discussed with Lingnan executive members about the strategies directions and provided a lot of insights and suggestions for the global business education of Lingnan (University) College.

Prof. S.P. Kothari acted as Board Chair and chaired the meeting. Prof. Liu Mingkang, Honorary Dean of Lingnan College and Prof Xu Xinzhong, Dean of Lingnan College gave the welcome remarks. Prof. Xu Xinzhong, presented to the IAB members on Lingnan’s ten-year strategic planning, as well as the specific strategies for research, faculty recruitment, academic programs, globalization, and branding. Lingnan envisions to become a leading school of economics and management in China with global standing in the next ten years, as Dean Xu stated. Lingnan will also participate in major domestic and international business school rankings and be recognized as one of China’s top 5 business schools. To achieve this goal, Lingnan will enhance faculty recruitment, especially senior faculty, strengthen branding and market positioning, and further expand corporate networks and partnerships.

Prof. Liu Mingkang then gave his presentation on the Inaugural Lingnan Forum, which was held at Lingnan in March 2012 and received enormous attention and feedback in Guangdong and even across China. Prof. Liu suggested in his report that the Lingnan Forum need to be more innovative in expanding its global impact, building even closer relations with Guangdong Government as well as other stakeholders. Faced with the current opportunities and challenges, Prof. Liu said, Lingnan Forum will be more focused on current economic and business issues to bring in more business leaders and experts from emerging economies in Greater China area, Europe and America.

The meeting continued with the presentations by Prof. Lu Jun, Associate Dean of Lingnan, on Undergraduate Education, Prof. Wang Chuanhui, Assistant Dean, on MBA Education, and Prof. Zhang Yanmei, Associate Dean, on Globalization Strategies.

During the meeting, IAB members engaged in heated discussions around the questions raised by the Dean and Associate Deans of Lingnan and gave a lot of suggestions on education and its purpose, globalization and international branding of the College, faculty recruitment, academic program development, and building of corporate partnerships. They also pointed out that Lingnan should stay focused on undergraduate education, as well as the development of leadership skills and global perspectives. Michael Andrew, President of KPMG International, said that Lingnan should be more focused on the development of innovative thinking, team work and business skills application in the Community. Dean Zeithaml of McIntire School of Commerce emphasized that the College should develop real business leaders for the future rather than technocrats. Finally, the Inaugural IAB Meeting came to a successful conclusion after a 15-minute close-door executive session.

After the Meeting, the IAB members and representatives, led by Prof. Liu Mingkang and President Xu Ningsheng, were received by the Guangdong Governor Zhu Xiaodan and Vice Governor Chen Yunxian at the Guangdong Provincial Government. Governor Zhu Xiaodan had a one-hour meeting with the members and touched upon related issues in Guangdong economic and financial development and higher education. He expressed his hope for Lingnan IAB members’ continuous support to Guangdong and bring more innovative ideas and inspirations for the development of Guangdong economy and education. Lingnan IAB members told Governor Zhu Xiaodan that they were very impressed to have listened to the report on Lingnan College's development in recent years. They have also expressed their interest and consent on supporting Lingnan in the coming years and contribute to the future development of higher education and economy in the Province.
